What a gas permit means for you
In Calgary, every furnace installation or replacement needs a City permit. Gas work needs a gas permit, and only a qualified gasfitter can get one.
We pull the permit on every gas job and book the inspection. When comparing quotes, ask whether the permit is included.
Which jobs need a permit in Calgary?
Every furnace installation or replacement, and any new gas line or gas appliance. Hot water tanks need a permit when the gas line, the venting or the type of tank changes.
Who can get the permit?
Only a qualified gasfitter can get a gas permit. Homeowners can't get a gas permit unless they're a certified gasfitter working on the home they live in.
What does the inspector check?
A City inspector checks the gas line, venting and clearances once the work is done. That's work you mostly can't see once the job is finished.
Why does an unpermitted install matter for insurance?
Under Alberta's Safety Codes Act, the owner is responsible for code compliance. If a fire, gas leak or carbon monoxide problem is traced to unpermitted gas work, your insurer can question the claim.
Why does it matter when I sell?
Buyers, home inspectors and lenders can ask for permit records on major systems. Unpermitted work may have to be permitted and inspected after the fact, which can mean opening finished walls during a sale.
