Heat Pump Installation in Calgary

A heat pump cools your home in summer and heats it for much of the year. In Calgary, most homes pair it with a gas furnace for the coldest days. We look at your furnace, ductwork, electrical and how your home is used before recommending a system.

  • Works with your furnace
  • Cold-climate models
  • CEIP financing eligible
  • Red Seal certified

Do heat pumps work in Calgary winters?

Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing, and your furnace takes over in deep cold.

That pairing is called dual-fuel. The heat pump handles heating when it's efficient, and the gas furnace covers the coldest stretches.

Can you add a heat pump to your existing furnace?

Usually, yes. You don't need to remove a working furnace to add a heat pump. If the furnace, ductwork and controls are suitable, the heat pump works with your existing forced-air system.

We check your current equipment first so you know what can stay, what may need to change and how the two systems will share the work.

What we check before installing

  • Existing furnace: its condition and how it pairs with the heat pump
  • Home size and layout: so the heat pump is sized to real heating and cooling needs
  • Outdoor unit location: airflow, snow, roof runoff, clearance and access
  • Ductwork and airflow: whether existing ducts can move enough air
  • Electrical: panel capacity and the dedicated circuit the heat pump needs
  • Thermostat and controls: so the heat pump and furnace switch over properly

Heat pump vs air conditioner

An air conditioner only cools, and your furnace does all the heating. A heat pump cools in summer and heats through fall, spring and milder winter days, so your furnace runs less.

If you're replacing an old AC anyway, a heat pump often costs a few thousand dollars more and gives one outdoor unit two jobs.

Financing and incentives

Calgary's Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) can finance eligible upgrades through your property tax bill when intake is open. It's financing, so it's repaid over time.

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan are closed to new applications. Programs change, so we'll check what's current for your home when we quote.

How much does heat pump installation cost in Calgary?

Typical Calgary range

Most installs on an existing furnace start around $7,000. A heat pump plus a new furnace costs more.

Electrical panel or ductwork upgrades add to it, and we quote those up front.

Heat pump installation FAQs

Still unsure? Call 587-719-5115 and talk to a technician.

Do I still need a furnace with a heat pump?

In Calgary, yes. The heat pump handles heating when it's efficient, and the furnace takes over during extreme cold. Home insurers also generally expect a backup heat source.

Can a heat pump replace my air conditioner?

Yes. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC in summer, and heats your home the rest of the year.

What size heat pump does my home need?

It depends on your home's heating and cooling load, layout, insulation and ductwork. We size it properly during the assessment.

Where should the outdoor unit go?

Somewhere with room for airflow and service, out of drifting snow and away from roof runoff, with a reasonable line route to the furnace.

How long does installation take?

Most installs on an existing furnace take a day.
