Smell gas?

Leave the house first. Then call ATCO's emergency line at 1-800-511-3447, or 911, from outside. Call us once it's safe.

Calgary weather and your system

  • Chinooks and refreeze

Chinooks can swing temperatures fast, then the cold comes back overnight. Meltwater refreezes on high-efficiency furnace vents and blocks them. After a Chinook, check that the two white PVC pipes outside are clear.

  • Hail season

Calgary gets more damaging hail than almost anywhere in Canada. Hail flattens the aluminum fins on AC and heat pump coils, which cuts airflow. A hail guard and a careful spot for the outdoor unit help.

Still unsure? Call 587-719-5115 and talk to a technician.

Do I need a City of Calgary permit to replace my furnace?

Yes. Every furnace installation or replacement needs a City permit. We pull it and book the inspection. If a quote doesn't mention a permit, ask why.

Can I pull my own gas permit in Calgary?

Only if you're a certified gasfitter working on the home you live in. Everyone else needs a qualified gasfitter to get it.

My furnace stopped after a Chinook. What happened?

The most common cause is ice or snow blocking the intake or exhaust pipe outside. Clear the openings by hand, then reset the thermostat. If it still won't fire, give us a call.
